Fine for smooth concrete, but... |
| Using four EarthBOXs with staking systems for a whole season, with six casters per box, I found the narrow split-wheel design of the casters fine for rolling the boxes on the smooth concrete of a patio or porch, and adequate on the rough concrete of a driveway, but not nearly as functional in an open yard. In order to give my garden plants the best possible sunlight, and to relocate the boxes while mowing, I had expected to move the boxes easily around the yard as needed. These caster wheels were obviously not made with that in mind. Their design, similar to that of caster wheels found on office chairs, provides a tunnel at the bottom third of the caster, between two independent wheels, that quickly becomes a trap for leaves, pine needles and grass when attempting to move the boxes across the yard. This debris will sometimes roll up under the hood of the caster causing jams that can prevent the wheels from rolling. The small diameter of the caster wheels also makes rolling the boxes over uneven terrain more difficult than expected. While the design of these casters makes them suitable for inside or outside use on relatively smooth and hard surfaces, they are far less effective when used outdoors on open ground, and especially after rain has softened the soil. I also sometimes had problems with the locking switches of the two lockable wheels on each EarthBOX flipping into their locked position automatically during transport. Perhaps a better design is needed to keep them unlocked when desired.
My experience with these caster wheels has been sometimes frustrating, but at least they made it possible to move the plants with only limited lifting required when going over obstacles taller than about a half-inch. For the future, I have started shopping for solid, slightly wider, single-wheel casters with a somewhat larger diameter that might work with the leg assemblies on my EarthBOXs to make them easier to move in the yard. Perhaps someone at EarthBOX could design a better solution for that purpose, for I rather imagine that I am not the only customer who might like to have mobile EarthBOXs away from the limited confines of porches and patios. |
